Valve's designers carefully designed the levels such that the player's eye would be drawn to where he was supposed to go and what to do.
Sometimes it's hard to know where you're supposed to go or what you're supposed to do. Parts of the car level are unplayable due to trees or other objects obstructing the road. It's not a mere texture update, they remade most of the maps, and not always for the better. It's been a while since I've played it and I don't know if they've fixed it since, but the version I played had serious flaws.
